KLONG TOEY
Sandwiched between an elevated motorway and Bangkok docks is an
area known as Klong Toey. Tourists peering out of rattling tuk
tuks' and taxis speed past hardly noticing, but this mosquito-infested
shanty town is home to seventy thousand non-people.
For forty years they have built their homes and
lives on these few acres of "unofficial land" unable
to register either births or deaths and refused all benefits and
basic services. Despite the ravages of poverty and disease, the
people of Klong Toey show a determination to improve their lives
and not simply survive. The result is a functioning community
which has stuggled to provide its own schooling, rudimentary health
care, a youth centre and co-operatives built with low interest
loans. For the past six years I have made several visits to Klong
Toey in an attempt to document their daily lives.
